Planned Giving Will Be Key as Higher Ed Philanthropy Surges

The latest findings from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) reveal a strong upward trend in charitable giving to U.S. colleges and universities, a sign that now is an ideal time for institutions to double down on promoting planned giving.

Philanthropic support to higher education rose by $3.5 billion in fiscal year 2024, reaching a record $61.5 billion. According to “CASE Insights on Voluntary Support of Education: 2024,” giving grew by 3% year over year, even after adjusting for inflation. Foundation giving to higher ed led the surge with a 13.3% increase, followed by alumni contributions (up 7.5%) and donor-advised funds (up 12.1%), which now account for more than 10% of all higher ed philanthropy.

“Generosity toward higher education continues to grow, reflecting a deep belief in its power to transform lives and strengthen communities,” said CASE President Sue Cunningham.

The report highlights that nearly half of all endowed gifts were directed toward student financial aid, and a significant share was also earmarked for research. These trends demonstrate that donors are investing in long-term impact, precisely the kind of commitment planned giving represents.

Now more than ever, colleges and universities have an opportunity to inspire planned gifts by showing donors how their estate plans can provide future scholarships, sustain faculty, and support transformational research. Planned gifts align with the priorities donors already value and ensure the institutions they care about continue to thrive.

As economic and political challenges persist, planned giving offers a sustainable source of future funding. For advancement professionals, the message is clear: build on this momentum, strengthen donor relationships, and promote estate planning as a meaningful way to leave a lasting mark on education.
